The Breakthrough: Why We Built a Better Fan

Superfan is a brand of Versa Drives Private Limited - a 35-year-old Coimbatore-based technology company specializing in motor control and embedded systems. In 2010, Versa Drives recognized that ceiling fans presented a silent crisis: found in nearly every Indian home, consumed over 20% of domestic electricity, yet the industry hadn't evolved in decades.

Around the same time, Mr. Durga, one of Versa Drives's founders, read a research paper by Prayas Energy Group titled "Ceiling Fans: An Overlooked Appliance." It revealed that India's 40 crore ceiling fans were collectively driving a 16,000 MW electricity demand. This insight set things in motion. Leveraging its core engineering strengths, Versa Drives created Superfan - India's first BLDC ceiling fan in 2012 - combining breakthrough efficiency with everyday comfort. The driving force behind the project was Versa Drives's deep-rooted commitment to environmental sustainability - innovation was the means to a sustainable mission at a large scale.

Policy Impact

From Innovation to National Regulation

Since 2012, Superfan has played a pivotal role in reshaping India’s national energy policy. Through rigorous product data, open knowledge sharing, and sustained engagement with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Bureau of Indian Standards, policymakers, NGOs, and industry advisors, Superfan helped steer the sector toward adopting formal standards and regulations for ceiling fans. This collaborative momentum culminated in a landmark government decision in 2023: the ban on inefficient 75W ceiling fans and the introduction of mandatory BEE star ratings. It all began in Coimbatore — a testament to how Indian innovation in a core technology like motors transformed an entire industry.
